Norton unable to update virus definitions
What version of NIS did you have installed before you had your computer reformated or put back to factory defaults? As Krusty has said, you will have to get all of your windows updates and get sp 3 for xp if you don't have it already and update drivers if not done already.
First though, please tell us what NIS you had installed before and is that subscription still valid now? I have renewed it regularly and it is valid until early Where will I find the Norton Recovery Tool?

I have asked for help on this website and received various suggestions half of which I don't understand - I am clearly a luddite, although I have tried several of the 'solved' solutions.
But the problem remains and I am being told that my computer is at risk. Given that I have faithfully renewed my subscription every year, it is galling that I should have so many problems fixing it rather than getting patches uploaded with the auto-updates. I did not get NIS to be a hobby in my spare time and am sick of being told that 'NIS causes X or Y problems or conflicts with other programmes by various computer boffs on and off-line.

I feel that the user's problem is that NIS is just too old for the definitions to automatically update even though the subscription is paid up to I think a newer version is needed here and unfortunately, version doesn't qualify for a free upgrade.

Were you by any chance trying to install Norton because something had happened that made you wonder if you'd picked up an infection? One way to give us some more information on this would be to try to install and run another, compatible antivirus program. Hs, then owever, it checks for updates, downloads, then after a few - 15 or so seconds of downloading gives one of the following: "Not all of the updates were successful", "Not all of the updates were successful", "Failed to check for some updates", It keeps saying Definitions Update 27 days as of today ago. It never changes during the day regardless of how many update times I've run it for the last four days.
Have you, or can you, tried another wireless adapter, or perhaps tried connecting to your modem or router by cable? How much time do you have left on your subscription of N? It's almost as if there is a problem having to do with the time synchronization.
I'm wondering if there is some sort of problem with the Cmos battery, but I guess with a laptop that is kind of hard to check out.

There's been a few updates in the last few weeks, some which could need updating manually. Have you got a little yellow 'Shield' Icon on your taskbar. And I think there is a version update coming out for N The release is being controlled, so you might, or might not, get it yet. Windows Auto update keeps it updated. System clock is correct. After about an hour the one-click update checking of my Norton came back to say the internet connection was not good!
