Vmware view licensing cheat sheet
Functions such as routing, load balancers, intrusion protection, and security exist as services within the hypervisor; as such, network admins configure and manage the virtual network from a single NSX control panel and API.
Agility and security first come to mind when considering NSX. The network silo within enterprise IT has long resisted abstraction. Webscale cloud providers and telecom service providers are two industries that demonstrate the value of the abstracted network. The customer has the ability via API or control panel to deploy and manage services such as load balancers, zero trust security, and multi-zone redundant networks--even users without a great deal of knowledge about networking can configure these advanced services within hours or minutes in AWS.
These services take days, months, or years to deploy within traditional data centers. Similarly, telecom service providers have taken advantage of SDN to deploy network function virtualization NFV , which takes what was a physical server or other dedicated hardware and virtualizes it. Think of a content distribution node CDN. In the past, if a service provider wanted to onboard a new CDN customer, the service provider deployed a technician to provision and install the physical server.
There's no need to deploy a technician, and the time required to onboard a new customer is reduced by weeks. While some service providers and webscale companies utilize NSX, VMware scales network abstraction down to the enterprise level.
Organizations heavily invested in VMware gain the ability to automate network, storage, and compute via a single organization for support. In the SDDC, all aspects of operations must be factored in. As an example, a surprising use for NSX is security. Zero-trust security makes no assumption of trust between nodes based on the network broadcast domain.
Using the vCenter database, security engineers gain the ability to implement security policies between two nodes on the same logical subnet. Before NSX, creating a zero-trust network was cost prohibitive. Although, in speaking with Martin Casado when he was general manager of VMware's Network and Security business unit, there are limits. When asked about non-virtualized nodes such as communications between two bare metal hosts, Casado answered that NSX doesn't offer support for communication that doesn't traverse the virtual switch hosted networks.
NSX doesn't completely replace the intelligence of the physical network, and NSX doesn't provide support for non-virtualized workloads. VMware vSphere is the most advanced and prominent hypervisor and virtualization management platform on the market. TechRepublic's cheat sheet to VMware vSphere is an overview of the platform. This guide is a living document, and it will be updated when there are major upgrades to vSphere. VMware vSphere is a hypervisor and management suite marketed to IT infrastructure providers.
ESXi is what's called a Type 1 hypervisor there are also Type 2 hypervisors ; another name for a Type 1 hypervisor is a bare metal hypervisor. Bare metal hypervisors are solutions where the hypervisor couples to the OS kernel. ESXi is available as a free download. In vSphere 6. The primary function of vCenter is to provide a single interface for the virtualized data center.
For example, many hyperconverged and backup solutions leverage vCenter as the management interface to their products.
There is increased competition in the hypervisor space from Microsoft's Hyper-V and open source KVM, and all enterprise IT vendors face challenges presented by the public cloud. VMware continues to innovate and leverage the existing ecosystem and install base to maintain a dominant position. Public cloud proves the first stop for new applications within startups and larger organizations; however, legacy 3-tier apps comprise most of the typical enterprise data center.
Without refactoring applications and retraining staff, virtualized server environments remain the most appropriate platform for legacy applications. VMware has built a significant ecosystem around vSphere. VMware has hundreds of partners that integrate with vSphere to enhance or expand the functionality of the platform. Some companies, such as Nutanix , are a competitor and an ecosystem partner to VMware.
Customers have built operations around the vSphere product and ecosystem. The addition of Kubernetes also makes vSphere a potential competitor in the cloud-hosted application space. Current vSphere customers that use the platform for managing virtual machines can easily add Kubernetes instances via the Tanzu platform, which VMware said is designed to be an easy spin-up option for pre-configured Kubernetes clusters. VMware vSphere is a pioneer in server virtualization, though its reach expands beyond the server and OS silo.
The number of virtual ports has long outnumbered physical Ethernet ports. Server virtualization emerged as a force in networking. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
