Linksys dma2100 codec
Cons: The problem with Media extenders in general is not the units themselves but the failure of Media Center inside Vista not being able to play all the different codecs on the market.
Microsoft really messed up by not letting the windows media player play the videos and not media center software. Without the ability to play all the different codecs you are left with watching tv, a handful of mpg movies, play music files. Upconversion was not good and very grainy. Computer has to be on for you to operate this unit over the network. Overall Review: I would not buy this until you research all the codecs the windows media center can handle.
I returned this unit and will not be buying media extenders based on Vista Media Center software. I am going to test the totally independent MVIX unit which has its own software and storage along with upconversion to HD. Cons: I had some problems getting it to work. It would have helped if I opened the package with the paperwork and noticed the driver disc included in the package.
I did my proof of concept with Windows Media Center using that device. When I was convinced of its value I wanted something in the living room. I couldn't be happier with the product. The menus MAY be a tiny bit slower than the not enough to bother me but there is absolutely no loading time during video playback, unlike the This device is so small, yet does so much. Cons: Was time-consuming to get standard video i. To get the wireless feature to work reliably, it took several hours searching the Web.
Then, the fix was simple. Use network tuning, which is with a task of the menu for the media extender, to maximize signal strength.
This involved positioning the wireless router, the media extender, and its antennas. Now, the picture and sound no longer break up with the wireless connection. Pros: dont need another computer to run media center box is nice and small black easy to hide streamed pictures ok. Cons: video recorded at best was not playable with Overall Review: its not a bad box i dont have a However that's were it ends, playback of other codecs is sketchy at best, impossible at worst.

Torbet , Chugging interface aside, the lets you stream picture, audio, and video files along with watching and recording live TV to be used in conjunction with a PC TV tuner. You can also hook into specific Internet plug-ins that reach out to the Internet for additional content. We were most impressed with the picture quality of movie files encoded with the H. While the claims to have compatibility with XviD and DivX encoded movie files, we found that only about 50 percent of the samples tested actually streamed over.
We should also note that none of the problem files had issues playing on our Media Center PC. Unfortunately, some of the high-res media that we were able to stream over to the did not play flawlessly, with hiccups occurring almost every 10 seconds or so. The low-res movie samples we tried however played with no interference. We got the same results after using the network tuner to improve quality settings, and we fell into the "good for HD streaming" category when we measured our network connection.
Since you can only control the with the included remote control, we were a bit disappointed when it proved tedious to use. The buttons are confusingly laid out and some of them aren't even labeled. The picture quality of the DVD player was good, performing on par with most players you'd find in a home-theater-in-a-box.
Any recordable data discs with multimedia files on them will not play. Last edited: Oct 18, Any updates on this? You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? No, create an account now.
